Horst Dornbusch owned and operated a small craft brewing company oin Massachusetts between 1995 and 2001, during which time he designed and produced mostly German-style beers. One of them, an Altbier called Dornbusch Ale, won a bronze medal at the 2000 Great American Beer Festival.
He has combined his practical knowledge of beer styles with his editorial skills and contributed two of the 18 volumes of the Association of Brewers' Classic Beer Style Series, the definitive English texts on beer styles. He covered Altbier, the cool-fertmented German ale, and Bavarian Helles, the original blonde German lager.
ALT
A Düsseldorf-style, full-bodied ale aged near the freezing point for
weeks to bring out its subtle character. It has a deep-red hue and a delicious
blend of malty sweetness and smooth bitterness. Bronze Medal Winner, Great
American Beer Festival 2000.
GOLD
A mild, deep-golden, crystal-clear Dortmund-style lager with a noble upfront
bitterness, a rich middle flavor, and a mellow, Iingering finishing aroma.
This beer is cold-fermented and filtered, and has a lacy, long lasting head.
OKTOBERFEST
A malt-accented, amber-colored, festive lager for crisp autumn days. The
original Munich Oktoberfest beer of the 19th century.
WINTER
NIGHT LAGER
A rare, delicate, southern German Schwarzbier. A dark, deceptively smooth
and dry lager. Opaque and rich, the gourmet's fireside brew to warm heart
and soul on a wintry night.
BOCK
A hefty, robust, nourishing spring lager, the "liquid bread" of
medieval Bavarian brew monks. A traditional Munich strong cloister beer.
HEFEWEIZEN
A crisp, tart, unfiltered wheat ale with a slightly clovey bite. Highly
effervescent with a firm, creamy, white head. The ideal quaffing brew for
a summer thirst. Brewed in the Bavarian Weissbier tradition.
LAGER
A refreshing, sophisticated Bavarian Helles, a lager of straw-blonde brilliance
and incredible subtlety.
