Horst Dornbusch's Publications
(Last Updated June 26, 2006)

Horst Dornbusch has several hundred publications, including three trade books on beer, in print. Currently he is working on three titles on beverage and culinary topics. After his education in the social sciences, he passed through his "literary boot camp" as a radio news editor at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and as a book editor at the Reader's Digest, where he worked for almost a decade. Subsequently, he managed the multilingual technical publications department of Siemens Medical Electronics for a decade, producing operating instructions and service manuals.

Today he is a PR entrepreneur and a regular beer style columnist for BeerAdvocate.com, America's most popular consumer website for beer lovers as well as for Brew Your Own Magazine, the world's largest-circulation homebrew journal. He is a sought-after speaker about beer in both North America and Europe, and has been interviewed on national and local radio. He has contributed to numerous North American and European periodicals — among them All About Beer, Brewers' Guardian, Beverage Business, The New Brewer, Zymurgy, WineMaker, American Brewer, and Ale Street News. In 2002, he was honored with the Golden Quill and Tankard Award by the North American Guild of Beer Writers for best feature on brewing.

He has been featured as "Brewer of the Month," Yankee Brew News, in October 1996. His Christmas Goose with beer was the cover feature of the Boston Globe Food section on December 22, 2004. In May 2005, he was the "interesting person of the month" of Das Fenster, a 19,000-circulation German-American magazine.

In Prost! The Story of German Beer 1997), Horst Dornbusch has his way with the nefarious 3000-year old history of beer making in central Europe. The book introduces you to the glorious story of German brewing — from the first turbid brews made by early tribes to the crisp, clean beers we drink today. This erudite, funny, and fact-filled tome reveals the subtle secrets of German beers, why they are special, and why Germany is arguably the greatest beer culture in the world.

"PROST! is perhaps the only work in English that details how the political, economic, and social history of Germany is inextricably linked to its brewing history and culture ... Finally, there is an accurate, comprehensive overview of the history of beer and brewing in Germany that obviates the need to pore over volumes of dry history books, each of which may contain as little as one or two relevant bits about brewing." Eric Warner, Tabernash Brewing Co.

Who says ho says there's no such thing as a German ale? Eat your Lederhosen! If you think the German beer land is just a lager land, think again, jawohl! In Altbier 1998), Horst Dornbusch pays homage to the lure and lore of Düsseldorf Alt, his hometown's beloved lagered ale. The book explains why in ancient times all beers were ales, even in Germany. It traces the proud and unbroken tradition of this copper-colored, full-bodied ale back to the dawn of civilization. First brewed by tribal Hausfraus at the end of the Bronze Age, Altbier is the oldest, continuously-brewed beer style in the world — still as chic and elegant in the Rhineland of today as it was lusty and uplifting around the Germanic campfires of yore.

In Bavarian Helles 2000), Horst Dornbusch tells the tale of Munich's famous beer hall lager with wit, warmth, and insight. The modern descendent of the original Beer-Purity-Law lager of 1516, Bavarian Helles, with its sublime balance between subtle maltiness and noble hoppiness, is perhaps the most delicate beer imaginable — pure libatious haute école, the blonde quaffing brew at the annual Munich Oktoberfest, and the universal lubricant of social intercourse of the Bavarians. Bavarian Helles transports the reader into a world of brewing perfection, where only the best of Braumeisters reign supreme.
