Horst Dornbusch, Founder

Horst Dornbusch is internationally known in the brewing industry as a consultant, brew equipment specifier, beer recipe creator, brewer, beer judge, event speaker, and multilingual author.

Horst has both practical and theoretical experience in almost all facets of brewing from growing and processing raw materials, to brewhouse and cellar work, to the economics of the beer business. He has made beer in breweries large and small on three continents, where he has worked with a wide range of clients on such issues as portfolio development, market positioning, product specifications, and facility planning.

A prolific writer, Horst has published almost 300 articles, as well as many books, about the technical, sensory, and economic aspects of beer and beer-making. His books include PROST! The Story of German Beer (1997), Altbier (1998), Bavarian Helles (2000), The Ultimate Almanac of World Beer Recipes (2010), Die Großen Biersorten der BRAUWELT® (2014), Beer Styles from around the World (2015), and Das Große BRAUWELT® Lexikon der Biersorten (2017), as well as Dark Lagers: History, Mystery, Brewing Techniques, Recipes (2018) and Untergärig und Dunkel — Die BRAUWELT® der dunklen Lagerbiere … mit 41 Rezepten (November 2020), both with co-author Thomas Kraus-Weyermann. In addition, he was the Associate Editor of and a major contributor to the monumental 900-page reference work, The Oxford Companion to Beer (2011). 

Prior to his professional career in beer, Horst spent two decades in publishing, first as a journalist at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, then as a book editor at the Reader's Digest, next as an editor of a horse magazine, and finally as the head of the five-language technical publications department of Siemens Medical Systems.

Horst was born in Germany and educated in both Germany and the United States. He is now a German-American dual citizen and lives in Massachusetts, USA. His academic credentials include an “Abitur” from Max-Planck Gymnasium for Math and Natural Science in Düsseldorf; a study program in the social sciences at Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany; a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Reed College in Portland, Oregon; and a Master of Arts in Politics from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Elva Ellen Kowald joined Cerevisia Communications full-time in 2019, after more than 30 years in marketing in Fortune 500 Companies and her own firm. Her responsibilities at Cerevisia Communications include operations, finance, editing, and market research.

Over the past five years, her articles about the economics and marketing of beer and other beverages have appeared in BRAUWELT®,  BRAUWELT® INTERNATIONALBrew Your Own MagazineBrewing and Beverage Industry International, and Brewer World (India.) 

Elva holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Marketing and International Business from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, a Master of Arts from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, and a Bachelor of Science from New York University in New York City.
